Most of us have fallen victim to the consumerism trap and
have forgotten what really matters. Life has become an
illusion - an endless pursuit of material things. None of
which will ever benefit your spiritual being. We have become
both spiritual and in many cases physical couch potatoes.
The time stolen from our lives by television, the Internet
and other forms of distractions all amounting, for the most
part, to a wasted unproductive life is destroying us all, destroying
families, destroying communities and destroying humanity.
We are most happy when we are living simple productive and
natural lives. We need to find out what is really important
and beneficial to our lives. A bigger house, faster car or
more important title is not the answer. Chasing an identity
is not the answer - truly discovering and knowing yourself
is the key. As long as you are distracted by so many things
in your life - no time to be still - you will never discover
the real you.
So . . . . .
Take a break, develop a real exit strategy away from these
many technology traps that keep you wasting your time and
avoiding a type of lifestyle that will truly benefit you.
A word about survival
You
all may not want to hear this, but we are heading towards some
very difficult times. The answer for combating these
difficult times to come is to become as self sufficient as
you possibly can. You will never become self sufficient
sitting behind this computer terminal. Fine, do the research
that the Internet affords. Use it wisely and create a hard
copy library of the sustainable tricks and practices you
have found. But keep your time in front of this time
consuming monster to a minimum. Allocate most of your time
to practicing sustainability and preparing yourself to live
and survive in the world from what you produce yourself.
This is the only answer in a world suffering from diminished
resources and lost humanity. You must learn to care for
yourself.
The days of inexpensive food and fuel are over. If
families communities are to survive the future they must
learn to become more self sufficient. This means acquiring
skills now that will benefit you later. You do not suddenly
wake up one morning and know how to spin yarn or even plant
vegetables. A proper garden takes time, money and energy.
Start now while money still buys something and learn before
you are forced to live this way.
Many of you may think this an alarmist view. fine, but
nonetheless, the methods we prescribe will make you happy
and healthier. If the sky does not fall down, you are still much
better off following this healthy lifestyle.
The following are some suggested ideas - many with links to
further reading and research.
- Start a
cooperative tribal ecovillage.
- Take up
sewing.
- Learn to
make cheese.
- Plant a
garden.
- Raise
some
chickens,
sheep,
goats, etc..
- Milk a
cow.
- Move
away from the city.
- Change
jobs - best to work for yourself.
- Go
solar.
- Dig a
well

Find
something that you really enjoy and will help you live a
more active and sustainable life and then keep to it. Try something
that requires your continued attention, like raising
livestock or a gardening. It may take some time to break the
Internet addiction you have developed, but it is worth every
effort.
